Forest of Reading

The students in Grades 3 to 8 have all been invited to join the Forest of Reading. It is a voluntary program that encourages and promotes Canadian literature. There have been many students that have come to the library to pick up their passports and books already. Ask your child if they are participating in the program. If not, make sure they come to see me as soon as possible to start. There is a minimum numbers of books that need to be read before 'voting' happens and students will need to collect signatures for each book read. Voting for 'favourites' will happen mid-April. Another thank you to the parent council who funds this program as well. If you need any more info, please email me at cynthia.mcgee@tdsb.on.ca
For more information about the program, check out the Ontario Library Association website link to Forest of Reading, http://www.accessola.com/ola/bins/content_page.asp?cid=92

Family Literacy Day

Our favourite story teller, Cheryl Thorton, came back to share her multicultural stories with us for Family Literacy day. The whole school experienced her dynamic and interactive presentations. Thanks to the parent council who funded this event! To learn more of Cheryl's talents, email me for the login and password for her website, StoryValues.

Book Fair

A huge but belated thank you to all volunteers for their help with the book fair. It was a huge success!!
We will be hosting one more book fair in the spring.

AUTHOR VISITS

LKS has had the pleasure of welcoming 3 authors to our school in the past few weeks.
In October, Andrew Larsen visited with the Kindergarten to Grade 3 students. He shared with us 2 of his books - Bella and the Bunny and The Imaginary Garden. It was a special day for Mr. Larsen since he had just found out that The Imaginary Garden was included on the Blue Spruce list for this year.
On November 10th, Robert Paul Weston visited with the Grade 7 and 8 classes. His talk about the 'true' Grimm fairy tales had the students hooked for the full hour! Mr. Weston won the Silver Birch award last year for his book Zor Ga Ma Zoo and now there is great demand for his new book, Dust City.
Yesterday, CBC sportscaster, author and illustrator Kevin Sylvester came in to talk with our Grade 4, 5 and 6 classes. His talents kept all captivated as he talked about the importance of PERSEVERANCE. All of us left with smiles on our faces and inspiration in our hearts!

Thank you to the Parents' Literacy Committee for sponsoring these events.

Fall into the Library!

We are up and running again in the library. There is a new system for student borrowers in Grades K-3. We now have bookbags! I have found that in the past 3 weeks of using them, there has been a marked increase in the number of kids remembering their books. Keep it up!
Only Grades K-3 get a formal library period this year but don't worry! Grades 4 through 8 are still welcome to come in anytime for borrowing, work and research. There are 2 homeroom times in the day - 8:50-9:10 and 2:59-3:15 when all are welcome to come and exchange. And don't forget about recess - the schedule is as follows:

Mondays - Gr 1 and 2
Tuesdays - Gr 3 and 4
Wednesdays - Gr 5 and 6
Thursday and Friday AM recess - Gr 7 and 8
Get caught reading, LKS!

Summer Reading Suggestions by TDSB Librarians

Check out your email from grade parents coming soon - included is a list of Summer Reading books for grades K to 8.
And don't forget - kids of all ages like being read to!

Gecko update:
Our female has now laid 3 sets of eggs and we are awaiting the arrival of our first hatchlings. Incubation is around 2 months and she laid the first set April 27th- we have been very patient!
Sydney, from Ms. Young's class, adopted Uma and has taken her home.
Spot, any hatchlings and the remaining eggs will be returned to Reptilia the last week of June. It has been a very rewarding and interesting program and I look forward to continuing it next year (OK the students begged:))

Thank you to all of the parents and the Literacy Committee members that have supported the library this year. It is a very exciting place to work and your support has been very much appreciated.
