What can you show with rice?

Harbourfront has a new art exhibit that uses piles and piles of rice to understand the enormity of human life on Earth. Some of our Grade 6 to 8 students were down for the Red Maple ceremonies last week and we took a look. It was an eye opener! Fantastically presented in a simple way, it was easy for everyone to see the enormous numbers represented by single grains of rice. If you have a chance, take a look. It's something to remember...

Cookbooks! Get Yours Soon!

The LKS created cookbooks are here and are selling quickly. For only $10.00 you can add some fantastic family favourites to your cooking repertoire. See me in the library for your copy or copies - don't forget grandparents, neighbours and friends.

Voting days!

Forest of Reading voting was held on May 27th and 28th. The library was transformed into a polling station and the students came in to cast their ballots. It was all very exciting! I have tallied the votes and submitted them to the Ontario Library Association. They will tally all of Ontarios votes and the announcement of the winners will be at the OLA Forest of Reading celebration on May 13 and 14th at Harbourfront. I will be taking our Grade 6 to 8 Red Maple readers to the celebration where they will hear various authors speak at the ceremony and be there for the announcment of the winner. We will also be lining up for autographs and doing some 'pretty cool stuff'. This is a fantastic opportunity for some special readers!

Forest of Reading Update

Voting day is coming up the week of April 20th.

All students are encouraged to finish their reading and visit the staff involved for a signature.

The George Hull Centre is offering a FREE workshop on how to communicate with your teen. The workshop is on April 2, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 at Richview Library. NOTE: parents must come accompanied by a teen.

Blue Spruce in the Library!

The Forest of Reading program, Blue Spruce, is for students in K-3 at LKS. As the students come to the library with their class, library teachers are reading one of 10 books that have been picked by the Ontario Library Association. At the end of the 10 books, students will be asked to vote for the favourite and I will be submitting the results from LKS to the OLA. Students in K-2 are working on a "forest passport", where they rate the book (in happyfaces) and draw their favourite character or event from the book. We also start each lesson with the Forest song. Ask your child how it goes (here is a hint "Here's some good news, Blue Spruce is here, There are 10 books, Lets give a cheer...").

We will be finished reading all 10 books by April and I am looking forward to seeing what book has been the favourite. Melanie Watt, author of Scaredy Squirrel, has been an LKS favourite in the past and she has another book, Chester, on the list this year. You never know...
